Why Liberia?Liberia is a small English speaking country on the central West Coast of Africa with a population of about 5 million people. In 1990, Liberia had no orphans and most children in cities received an education. Following a 13-year civil war from 1990 to 2003, an estimated 250,000 people died, leaving refugees and orphans in its wake. As a result, an abundance of orphanages and children living with relatives have little or no means of support; with an increasing unemployment rate, Liberia ranks in the bottom percentage of income and education availability. From 2014 to 2015, Ebola ravished Liberia: creating more orphans and devastating an already fragile economy. Foreign companies have slowed or stopped their work altogether in Liberia, keeping much needed revenue from benefiting the country. |
